Parenting Lecture:Techniques for Managing Negative Emotions Between Parents and Children

On December 13, 2024, we hosted a parenting education lecture focusing on the function of negative emotions and strategies for interacting with children. Many parents struggle to recognize and respond to their children's negative emotions, often unsure of how to manage them. This can lead to misconceptions that children are simply moody, prone to tantrums, overly emotional, or difficult to handle.

We were honored to invite Professor Jia-En Wang, a clinical psychologist from Taipei Mackay Memorial Hospital.

Professor Jia-En Wang previously spoke at a 2021 TED Talk on The Meaning of Life, encouraging people to pause in their busy lives and embrace the present moment. He is also dedicated to researching high-functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome, conducting parental growth groups and teacher effectiveness programs. His extensive experience made this lecture exceptionally insightful!

The lecture followed a four-step framework for emotional and behavioral regulation, with the professor methodically guiding participants through each stage.

We first explored different emotions to better understand the causes of negative emotions and difficulties in emotional regulation. Finally, we learned strategies for handling emotional conflicts with children and ways to help them regulate their emotions. During Professor Wang's engaging presentation, which included real-life case studies, participants actively asked questions and engaged in discussions. The post-event survey reflected highly positive feedback, with many attendees expressing interest in future sessions on the topic.
