Dr. Ming-Hsueh Tsai from the National Academy for Educational Research launched a "Mathematics Self-Learning Development Program for Fifth-Grade Students." In support of this initiative, the foundation introduced the KUMON mathematics program at LongPu Elementary School in New Taipei City, where 24 fifth-grade students participated in a nine-month course.

The study followed the KUMON learning method, incorporating academic diagnostics, curriculum planning, material assessment, home-based grading, and progress discussions. The program was led by experienced KUMON instructors, with school staff and observing researchers maintaining a non-interfering role.

Findings from the study revealed that improving students' academic abilities led to increased learning confidence and a resilient, never-give-up attitude. The introduction of the KUMON method successfully fostered independent learning habits, significantly enhancing students’ overall academic performance.
